Wine & Dine: Small Lobbying Shops and Nonprofits Priced Out of Legislative Meals

ANNAPOLIS - The night before a powerful Senate panel voted to approve the state's first alcohol tax increase in decades, one of the world's largest liquor companies wined and dined 11 of the 13 committee members at a popular Colonial-era tavern.
 The tab: $2,863.50.
The dinner, paid for by British liquor giant Diageo, is just a snapshot of the free meals and free booze lawmakers received during the 90-day session from lobbyists and special interest groups trying to influence legislation and shape public policy.

No Meeting Today

Submitted by Larry Jarboe on April 19, 2011

Today, there was no meeting of our Board.  However, everywhere I go in Southern Maryland there is concern with the suicide attempt from fellow Commissioner Cindy Jones:

First and foremost, her 14 year old son is a hero who acted quickly and properly to make the 911 call to save his mother's lfe.

Next, the 17 second response by the Maryland State Police in this rural area is phenomenal.  The two and a half minute response time by the Second District Volunteer EMS/Fire Service is also outstanding.

Guest Commentary by Carlleen Cairns
As I read the President’s speech regarding the action taken by the military under his command in Libya, I noticed there were many unanswered questions. He never mentioned by name or association the ones he referred to as the “rebels” or why so many of them involved in the uprising throughout the Middle East speak Farsi according to reports from on the ground.

What If?

Submitted by Larry Jarboe on April 13, 2011

On a National level, you and I will probably have not much effect on the political gridlock in Washington DC.  Both party camps are united against securing American Energy Independence.  The Middle East chaos will control the price of fuel thus ensuring a continuing depressive economy.

Locally, we have our own politically divisive scenario with developers and special interest groups receiving government subsidy while taxpayers and teachers play second fiddle.  Funding FDR and free concerts is a priority over new teachers and para-educators.

A Soggy Groundbreaking

Submitted by Larry Jarboe on April 13, 2011

This afternoon, Commissioner President Jack Russell, Commissioner Todd Morgan, and I were joined by a contingent of Navy Chiefs who are helping build a Habitat for Humanity home in Lexington Park.

It was a wet afternoon but it did not dampen anyone's enthusiasm for the celebration.  The rain served to soften the soil for the expedited groundbreaking.

Habitat for Humanity is providing a real service by making single family cottage housing available for a reasonable price and a lot of sweat equity.

United They Stand: Local Lawmakers Fight Illegal Immigration with State-by-State Strategy

ANNAPOLIS - A group of state legislators across the country are getting fed up with federal inaction on illegal immigration, so they're taking it upon themselves to reform immigration law.
Led by members of a group called State Legislators for Legal Immigration, their coordinated strategy called "attrition through enforcement" is designed to impose legislation that makes life so difficult for illegal immigrants that even if they aren't caught and deported, they may just leave on their own.

Social Services Director tells staff not to call cops on deadbeat dads

Submitted by Editor on April 8, 2011

A recent policy decision by the director of the St. Mary's Social Services Director Ella Mae Russell prohibits staff of the agency from reporting to police when those with active warrants for child support appear to pick up welfare checks.  Jailing such offenders for whom warrants have already been issued is about the only way to collect child support from them.  A "Jail-Free Zone" at the welfare office allows the deadbeat dads who sire numerous offspring to continue to collect welfare checks to spend on drugs and liquor while taxpayers pay to provide for their children.

A Unanimous Denial

Submitted by Larry Jarboe on April 5, 2011

Today, there was a unanimous vote of approval from our Board to say NO to a traffic crossing of the County maintained railroad right-of-way for a development on Rt.235.  All the commissioners agreed that the property should be served by the access off St. Andrews Church road and the FDR access which will be built by the developer.

The Board agreed with limiting access across the hiker biker trail (RRROW) for safety and long term rail infrastructure.

This simple decision says a lot about the importance of saying no when necessary.

Debt More Dire Than Anyone Thinks

Submitted by Editor on April 2, 2011

By Bill Wilson – The nation is risking a fiscal calamity that threatens a catastrophic default on the $14.2 trillion national debt and the collapse of the dollar as the world’s reserve currency.  If something is not done to bring the nation’s fiscal house into order, soon the debt will become too large to even refinance, let alone be repaid.

When Taxpayers and Teachers Unite

Submitted by Larry Jarboe on April 1, 2011

One of the low points of the past Board of St. Mary's County Commissioners was approving a budget that brought education funding down to Maintenance of Effort levels.  Even I, whom most consider to be the most conservative member of that Board, recommended we allocate additional dollars above MOE.
