KABUL, Afghanistan – Nine NATO service members were killed Thursday in Afghanistan, including seven U.S. troops among eight who died when a powerful bomb exploded in a field where they were patrolling on foot, officials said.

Two Afghan policemen also died and two others were wounded in the explosion in the mountainous Shorabak district of Kandahar province, 12 miles from the Pakistan border, said Gen. Abdul Raziq, chief of the Afghan border police in the province.

"Two months ago, we cleared this area of terrorists, but still they are active there," Raziq said.

During our budget session on Monday, Commissioners Russell, Morgan, and Jones approved placing almost three million dollars of Capital expenditure to begin FDR Boulevard while keeping in the Operating budget well over a million dollars of entitlement allocation to special interest groups that have no contract of accountability with any County Department.

Will Common Sense Prevail?

A lot can happen in a year. At this time last year, the St. Mary’s County Commissioners were finishing up our budget as we do each year prior to June 1. The tax rate was placed at the prior level of 85.7 cents of assessment which meant that property tax bills were going to rise due to unreasonable State assessments that did not reflect the long standing depressive economic reality. For the first time I can remember, the Board of Education was restricted to the lowest funding allowed by law which is called maintenance of effort.
