Budget cycle begins anew: cut spending now!
Next month the St. Mary's Board of Commissioners will start out the formulation of a new budget and the time to start balancing the budget is now and the Board should start by instructing all department heads to prepare budgets with a ten percent cut in spending. Should the fiscal situation improve over the course of the next year, which is highly unlikely, the commissioners could always prepare a priority list of needed proposals, but for now, in order to avoid layoffs of deputies and other county employees, prudent fiscal directives must go out from the Board to the administrator and department heads.
Last year Commissioner Larry Jarboe requested that the Board direct a five percent cut in spending for the budget being prepared. The Board ignored Jarboe and Krazy Kenny and the Taxocrats instead enacted a budget which failed to maintain the Constant Yield and caused a tax hike in property taxes. In October, the Board was reeling from $6 million in cuts of state funds to the county and searching for ways to cut spending. Of course, they failed to listen to Jarboe in April when he prepared his own list of ways to cut spending. Simply put, its a Fool's Paradise in Leonardtown and its time to vote for a team of commissioners to work with Commissioner Jarboe to cut spending and hold the line on taxes. The taxpayers have nothing more to give. The waste and illogical expenditures need to be curtailed, which would be a good habit for government to get used to in the future.
