Tired of Having Your Property Over Assessed and Over Taxed? Come Tonight to the Public Forum and Tell it to the Commissioners.

Tired of Having Your Property Over Assessed and Over Taxed?
We have all felt the economic hit we took in our pockets when the Assessment of our properties went through the roof which resulted in Higher Taxes. Now can you sell your home at this Assessed value? Of course not. Does your County Government do something in these hard economic times to help with these High Assessments and try to adjust these assessments to current economic reality, or incorporate a Constant Yield Tax? Dream again. These Fat Cats are taking your hard earned dollars and don’t want to give any of it back. They only want to spend it like Monopoly Money on things like the Mega Library and Hayden Farm. It is up to you to confront the Tax Man.
You have the Right to Challenge your Assessment at “ANY TIME”. Now the form (SDAT-RP-12-8/06) you fill out indicates: “This petition must be filed with the Supervisor of Assessments no later than the first work day following January 1 to review a value or classification To be Effective for the next taxable year beginning July 1.” This is somewhat misleading to the Taxpayer that you only have a certain window to Challenge your Assessment. I believe this was done Intentionally to the Taxpayer. You can Challenge you Assessment at “ANY TIME”, and “IF” you desire it to be Effective the next taxable year (July 1), it must be filed the first work day following January 1. Here’s How.

Or Call/E-Mail Saint Mary’s County Government at the following:
ST. MARY'S COUNTY
Carter Bldg., Room 2059
23110 Leonard Hall Drive
P.O. Box 653
Leonardtown, Maryland 20650-0653
Hours: 8:00 to 5:00
(301) 880-2900
FAX: (301) 475-4856
E-mail: stm@dat.state.md.us
Also, be aware in addition to you getting your Property Assessment Reduced, there is a possibility of getting back money the County may have “Over Taxed” you. If your mailing address is a P.O. Box, the Software the Assessments folks use has a glitch in that it may have your Primary Residence listed as a Rental Property instead which results in even higher Taxing. If your Primary Residence is indeed listed as a Rental Property, you are Entitled a Maximum of 3 Years Back Refund which could amount in the Thousands of Dollars.
Happy New Tax Year
Wow. A web page that can save me money and informing me what the Government may owe me and how to deal with our Over Assessed Property. Wonderful. They have my vote.
Thank You, Rich for posting this info. I gave the website address (townhallalliance.com) to a woman last night who was distraught over her assessment. This is very important info that you have shared.
As assessments go up, the County Commissioners can vote to hold the line on your tax bill going up by holding the Constant Yield Tax Rate. I am the lone commissioner who felt that your property tax bill should not have increased during these most trying times.
All of our Town Hall Alliance candidates have a solid commitment to hold the line on taxes. Obviously, we are Republicans and will need your help in the September Primary Election.
Thank You for your support.
