Why does 'Old Dave', the unelected GOP boss oppose the efforts of the Town Hall Alliance?

Why does the St. Mary's Central Committee Chairman, who was appointed to his position where he is supposed to be building the party, take repeated jabs at the Town Hall Alliance slate?

The slate which has formed, for the first time in history, a ticket with a written platform, to support the conservative efforts of St. Mary's Commissioner Larry Jarboe, who has actually been elected THREE TIMES as St. Mary's Commissioner, once in 1994 and again in 2002 and 2006.   Jarboe has proven himself as a fiscal conservative interested in the well being of St. Mary's County and is working to build a team which will hold down your taxes and deliver services in an efficient way.

Why would "Old Dave" Willenborg, who fashions himself as a party boss, leave a threat on various slate member's phones threatening to withhold party support?  No Republican should give a dime to the local GOP party functions until a new central committee is elected which will support the ticket or any Republican who wins nomination.

But in this tape, Willenborg states clearly that he doesn't care if he is elected and will 'go to the papers' to sink the Town Hall Slate.

Dave: take your ball and go home, the Town Hall Alliance slate is working hard to win the votes of the citizens and they will win with or without your help.  It would have been easier for them had the GOP central committee actually ever raised money, opened a headquarters, organized volunteers, supported Commissioner Jarboe at public hearings when he tried to hold down taxes and written letters of support.  But apparently they have been too busy trying to look important.  In reality, they are simply the clones of Hambone McKay and represent the self-serving dogma of good old boy politics which the county needs to shed for good.

Who does this guy think he is? Does he really think he is important or that his witholding support is going to make a difference one way or another? What is the Central Committee anyway, and what do they do? I see CANDIDATES out there doing stuff and promising to hold the line on taxes and keep government small and out of people's lives. I do not see the Central Committee anywhere doing anything.

Until recently, I never even heard of this so-called "central committee" (aren't Central Committees from the old Soviet Union?) and have sure never seen them do anything. So why are they now trying to work against the Republican candidates who are trying to get in and make things better? Who are the members of this communist body? I would like to contact them and give them a piece of my mind!

Why on earth would anyone take jabs at the Town Hall Alliance? It's doubtful that the GOP disagrees with the simple THA platform.

  • Maybe because the Town Hall Alliance is running a dirty campaign and taking jabs at everybody regardless of party affiliation?
  • Maybe because Larry Jarboe was a democrat prior to becoming a republican for his election in 1994.
  • Maybe because Larry switched back to democrat after losing to Shelby Guazzo in 1998, then became a republican again to run in 2002.

It looks to me like the THA isn't really a republican slate, but more a radical Tea Party slate that neither party wants to align with.  Try being respectful and civilized.

If the THA=Tea Party, they have my vote.

Big deal.  So Commissioner Jarboe changed parties.  Non-issue.  The Republican party does not have a heredity litmus test. Loyalty to the party platform and issues are what count.   Today more than ever before the voters in our county are more educated on the issues and know that actions speak louder than words.   We fully intend to vote the issues.  The biggest issue is runaway spending.  We simply cannot continue business as ususal.  No more "feel good" financing by the tax payers.  Mr Jarboe has been at the forefront waiving the fiscal conservatism flag ever since he was first elected.  However, his efforts to bring fiscal responsibiliy and accountability to county government have been blocked at every turn by the current BOCC Democrate majority (plus Kenny Dement).  Unfortunately, Mr Dement, who is running as a Republican, cannot be counted on to vote the Republican platform. He has consistently voted with the Democrats to raise our taxes for the last decade. He has to go!

The THA has been active, yes active for the past year. They are not some "Johnny come lately's" that jump into the contest at the last minute hoping to get elected on campaign promises alone in the 4 months leading up to election day.  As a unified team they have championed for the tax payers and not the good ol boys on every issue our current BOCC has tried to slip past the public. They have challenged the Board to become responsible and accountable. Their involvement in the most recent BOCC rezoning fiasco (620 acres in Hillville and Mill Cove) helped turn the tide in favor of the residents most affected.

The THA is not running a dirty campaign

Actions, yes actions speak louder than words.

It is possible that Mr. Willenborg has violated his oath of office.

                                (1)           The county of the County Central Committee on which they serve; and

                                (2)           The district which they represent, if their election was for the purpose of representing that district.

                b.             Oath of Office.

Every member of a County Central Committee must take the Party Oath (described in  ARTICLE XI of this document) prior to assuming the duties and responsibility of office.  The County Chairman (specified in Section 4 of this ARTICLE)  must certify to the Party Chairman that all serving members of the County Central Committee have done so.

ARTICLE XI - PARTY OATH OF OFFICE

Section 2.              Substance of the Party Oath.

In order to take the Party Oath, all members of County Central Committees and all Officers of the Party must solemnly swear or affirm that they will:

a.             Uphold and support the Constitution of the United States;

                b.             Be faithful and bear true allegiance to the State of Maryland and uphold the Maryland

                                Constitution and laws thereof;

                                (1)           With diligence to the best of their skill, abilities, and judgment

                                (2)           Without partiality or prejudice.

I can't believe that guy threatened to take support away from a candidate or candidates because he's getting bad press! Welcome to politics Dave!  What happened to freedom of speech?!  Just because you don't like something someone says about you doesn't give you the right as our party leader in the county to take "our" support away from anyone.  I may or may not like a member of the Town Hall slate, but that is my decision as a voter to choose, in the privacy of my poll booth.  The voters decide who to support, not you!  The minute you were elected or appointed or however you got into that position, Mr. Good Ol' Boy, you assumed a greater responsibility to all of us Republicans, not just the one whose bruised ego you are nursing!  It seems you've forgotten who you work for!  Do us all a favor...take your burning desire to "not run" and do just that - NOT RUN!

Stop being so hard on Dave!  He is the 2009 Republican Man of the Year.....elected by.....himself!  The Central Committee nominates the man of the year, without any input from the public, and then the only people allowed to vote on the nomination is...them!  Sweet!  Did he get a crown?

The THA isn't waging a war.  Some posters that take exception to Dave's BS are.  Don't worry. When all the potential candidates from both parties have registered the real campaigning will begin.  The THA's  Platform is on their web site.  Check it out.  I've been to a couple of their neighborhood meetings and fundraisers and have had all of my questions answered to my satisfaction.  Face to face.  Check their calendar for up coming events and attend one of them. There's usually no cover charge. Talk to them instead of playing games on this web site.   You'd be amazed at what a difference it will make.

Forget the Republican Constitution i heard Old Dave is a federal employee. So isn't it illegal for him to be the Republican Chairman under the Hatch act?

The Hatch Act is an interesting point.  The way I understand Hatch,  he can not be involved with fundraising activities.  That said, the chairman of a central committee is also the chairman of the campaign finance entity recognized by the Md Board of Elections to do fundraising.  Sounds to me like Willenborg is in violation of Hatch in his capacity as chairman of a campaign entity.  maybe it's time he checked around his glass house before tossing those rocks.  Twelve years ago his brother participated in the Great Paper Caper that cost the county $500,000 now he is squelching campaigns.  Interesting........

Please try keeping the debate to the issue of whether or not the GOP chairman should be leaving threats on the voice mail of Republican candidates to do as he says or he will 'put the stink' on their campaign by 'going to the papers'....as he is aligned with Tommy "Hambone" McKay's County Times, it is clear he won't have to work too hard to get McKay to side with him against Randy Guy.    Does it matter to supporters of 'Old Dave' that McKay lied about having a college degree on his campaign literature and county website for four years until the truth was revealed in ST. MARY'S TODAY. Does it matter that McKay then blamed it all on a county secretary?  McKay is just a spoiled rich kid used to being able to buy what he wants...what did Willenborg cost him?  Good Old Boy politics hasn't delivered very good government to St. Mary's County and McKay and Willenborg want to protect that system which holds public hearings on Christmas Eve to buy stinky deals like the Hayden Farm for twice the value.  Vote for Commissioner Larry Jarboe's Town Hall slate and keep these McKay Good Old Boys and far-left liberal Democrat elitists from running your county.

Since party affiliation seems to be an underlying theme here...........Kenny Dement was a life long Democrat before switching to the Republican Party after failed attempts running as a Democrat. The biggest problem is that Dement does not appear to have a conservative bone or blood vessel in his body. He claims to be the be the "commissioner that listens". So, how many of you went to Dement and said, "Please raise my taxes?" That seems to be the only message that Dement has been hearing no matter what is being said. Is there a disconnect with what the" listening commisioner" actually hears and how he votes? Must be, he keeps voting for taxes to be raised.

I hear that on Kenny’s new signs that have Listens, Vision, Honest, etc. that he was considering putting on “Conservative” too.  He apparently told some County workers that he decided not to put down “Conservative” and decided he had to be “Honest” about it, and hence he chose “Honest”.

Remember that when you vote.
